 | The Tao of Legal Ethics
By: Bette Kester Conrad, Esq.
Is the term "legal ethics" really an oxymoron?
The differences, and the seeming dichotomy, between the rules of legal [professional] ethics and the philosophies of personal and professional morals and integrity have engendered much antagonism between legal professionals and the general public, and have provided a continuous source of confusion and vexation for those who work within the legal profession. A disturbing result is that lawyers and clients are often at a loss to discern where - and if - the rules of ethics and the philosophies of morals and integrity meet! There needs to be more clarity and awareness of the differences between legal (or any profession's) ethics, and personal integrity or morals. Indisputably, the rules of ethics perform a vital function in governing the professions; however, mere technical Ethics DO NOT EQUAL Morals + Integrity.
There is, indeed, a "golden rule" of legal ethics which, properly understood and applied, while following the Way of its underlying philosophical premise, can end the confusion and resolve the dichotomy.
Taken together, these concepts produce: The Tao of Legal Ethics
"The Tao of Legal Ethics" is explained here for the professional and lay person.
There is a Difference ...
between legal ethics and personal morals and integrity;
There is a "Golden Rule" ...
of legal ethics correlating with personal and professional integrity;
There is a Philosophy ...
underlying the visible, more mundane dogma of legal ethics;
and
There is a Way ...
a higher road of personal and professional conduct in the law -
It is:
The Tao ... of Legal Ethics.
Reviewers' Comments and Endorsements
"Bette Kester Conrad ... unique and empathetic .... She expresses what too often is an "us versus
them" antagonism that separates lawyer and client. She reminds us that the legal professional and
his client are both due the ancient dignity of being treated as individuals. This ethic makes
this work important for all."
Arthur M. Bergmann, former Political Editor and columnist, Long Island Newsday.
"Bette Conrad brings much-needed wisdom and heart to the issue of legal ethics. How refreshing to
learn from a lawyer with a broad vision, coupled with the experience and skills to bring it to
life. I wish that every attorney or anyone seeking an attorney would read this important work!"
Alan Cohen, author of "I Had It All the Time."
"This book is densely packed with important concepts and ideas concerning the practicalities and the philosophy of legal/professional ethics. While focused primarily on legal ethics, its important message and insights are applicable to all professional and business fields. All professionals and executives would profit from its lessons."
